The GDx scanning laser measures the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer, which is the very first part of your eye that is damaged by glaucoma. One of only two in Canada thus far, this new technology allows the doctors to analyze and diagnose glaucoma at the earliest stage, even sooner than any glaucoma testing that has been used in the past.
No one knows the sole cause of glaucoma, but it is a disease of the optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can lead to vision loss. Glaucoma develops slowly and painlessly, often without symptoms for a long time. While not curable, the earlier glaucoma is detected, the less damage it can cause and the easier it is to treat.
The GDx test is quick, easy and provides accurate results in detecting glaucoma and monitoring its progression. You would want this test especially if you are over the age of 45, have a family history of glaucoma, are very near-sighted, diabetic or if you just want peace of mind.
